TRON Star Weighs In On Franchise’s Future

If you were disappointed about the cancellation of TRON 3, imagine how the cast feels. Bruce Boxleitner starred in the original film and returned for TRON: Legacy, the animated series TRON: Uprising, and the video game TRON 2.0, but on the heels of the TRON 3 cancellation, he says his days as Alan Bradley are over. “I don’t really care anymore,” he told /Film. “I’m done with it. I’ve moved on. I hate to say that, but it’s been too up and down for me. I would rather not just keep going. I don’t want to repeat my career anymore. That’d be like, ‘Let’s reboot Scarecrow and Mrs. King.’ No, I’m not interested. Or Babylon 5.”

So why exactly was TRON 3 cancelled? Boxleitner says he has been privy to little more than a few “snippets of information,” but he confirms that the film was “very close to actually shooting.” Some have suggested that the cancellation was a direct result of Tomorrowland’s box office failure, but the actor thinks it has more to do with the changing philosophy of Disney. “I don’t think they really want it anymore,” he says. “I think they’ve got Star Wars. They’ve got Marvel. Legacy was successful. I’m not sure that they really had that much interest anymore. I hate to say that because I think there’s a lot more to go.”

If you’re starting to sense mixed feelings about that whole “I don’t really care” thing, it may be because Boxleitner believes the franchise has never been more relevant. After all, the real world is getting more like TRON every day. “I’m always about looking forward, but I thought TRON was the one thing that would keep going forward because we’re living it. It’s not like going back and revisiting, trying to remake the original like everything else does.”
