Suicide Squad Cut The One Moment Joker Fans Were Really Excited About
Warning: There are major spoilers for Suicide Squad below.
Suicide Squad may have made a gazillion dollars during its opening weekend, but it also endured a polarizing reception among critics and fans. A major reason for some fan ire was the minimal screen time of Jared Leto’s Joker in the 123-minute movie, despite the fact that he was the most-hyped character in the film’s marketing cycle.
Part of the reason could be the trove of Joker-centric scenes ultimately cut from director David Ayer’s final version, prompting Leto to admit that “there’s probably enough footage” for a standalone Joker film. And after one dedicated fan uploaded an unconfirmed list of every scene cut from the film to Reddit, one moment in particular stood out.
When a new Suicide Squad trailer dropped during the 2016 MTV Movie Awards, people began connecting Leto’s Joker with the Joker from the 2014 comic book Batman: Endgame. One fan even noted, “If David Ayer got his inspiration of the Joker from Batman: Endgame, Jared Leto could just be the scariest Joker ever.” Unfortunately, that’s not what ended up happening.
Disappointed this scene got cut from Suicide Squad, it reminded me a lot of Joker from Batman: Endgame. pic.twitter.com/QmHBDFcjAX

In Batman: Endgame, the Joker was semi-immortal, thanks to a special serum he used to heal himself. Greg Capullo’s artwork depicted the Joker with half his face burned/melted off, which is exactly what Leto looked like for a split second during the trailer. I guess you could consider him surviving that helicopter crash and magically appearing to rescue his puddin’ (Harley Quinn) as a type of homage to the immortal Joker, but his face in the scene definitely didn’t channel his comic book predecessor.
Hopefully we’ll get to see our Endgame Joker on the DVD’s deleted scenes, but until then, it looks like the Joker’s got the last laugh.
