Expect ‘Great Things’ From Spidey In The Marvel Cinematic Universe
Ignoring the (entirely speculative) news that superhero movies are almost dead, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige continues speaking excitedly about the company’s future. In particular, he is ecstatic about the deal Marvel struck with Sony back in February, making it possible for Spider-Man to finally join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not wasting any time, the studio has already landed an actor for the role (Tom Holland) and shot his Marvel debut for next year’s Captain America: Civil War.
As important as this cameo is for the fans, Feige insists it’s of little consequence as far as Spider-Man’s big screen future is concerned. “The most important thing as a standalone is relaunching Spider-Man in his own standalone movie with his own storylines that fits into this universe,” he said, referring to the 2017 release currently in the planning stages. “That is job number one for us. The connectivity is great, but it doesn’t drive the train.”
An executive producer on Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy, Feige feels strongly connected to the character. But that’s not the only reason he’s excited about the Sony deal. “I think we can do great things with Spider-Man,” he explained. “I think Spider-Man can serve great purpose in our universe and that’s where he belongs. That was what was unique about him in the comics… not that he was the only superhero in the world; it’s that he was a totally different kind of superhero when compared against all the other ones in the Marvel universe.”
