Spielberg Zeroing In On Ready Player One Lead
Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One won’t be out for another two-plus years, but the director already has his shortlist of actors up for grabs to play the film’s lead female role of Art3mis, an in-game avatar in a fictional MMORPG from the year 2044 called OASIS. If you have no idea what on Earth you’re reading right now, check out Ernest Cline’s 2011 sci-fi novel the movie’s based on.
For those who don’t have time to read the novel right this very moment, it depicts a dystopian future in which people live out their futile lives in an online gaming universe much like the ones people currently live out their present-day futile lives in. The story follows a teenager named Wade Watts, who becomes involved in a virtual contest that requires users to solve cryptic pop culture puzzles in order to inherit billions of bucks. Naturally, the competition gets deadly pretty fast.
While we have no clue who Spielberg plans to cast as protagonist Wade, according to The Wrap, Art3mis will either be played by Elle Fanning (Super 8, Maleficent), Lola Kirke (Mistress America, which is great and in select theatres now), or Olivia Cooke (who’s also being considered for a big Star Wars role—the lucky duck).
Also according to The Wrap, the film’s casting director is helping Spielberg thin out his choices so he can get right to work after wrapping his next two big screen blockbusters, CIA thriller Bridge of Spies (trailer alert) and The BFG, which is based on the beloved Roald Dahl novel, not to be confused with the beloved Doom weapon.
Ready Player One boots up December 15, 2017. As you already know, Spielberg is at the helm, while screenplay adapting duties go to X-Men 2 and Avengers writer Zak Penn.
