The New Hellboy Is Definitely Not Your Typical Superhero Movie

Shortly after news broke last year that the Hellboy franchise was returning without director Guillermo del Toro and star Ron Perlman, co-screenwriter Andrew Cosby revealed some additional details. Describing this reboot (which may be called Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen) as “a darker, more gruesome version of Hellboy,” Cosby explained that director Neil Marshall plans to “walk a razor’s edge between horror and comic book movie.”

Any number of things may have changed over the last 13 months, but creator Mike Mignola recently clarified the reboot’s intentions, specifically its relationship to superhero movies. “If anything, we’re trying to do something very different,” he told io9. “Basically, there’s no part of Hellboy that was ever going to be like other superhero movies, and the more Marvel stuff there is, the more DC stuff there is… Hellboy never really feels like—even in the del Toro things—a superhero movie.”

Mignola elaborated on his perception of superhero movies, explaining how the new Hellboy will break from convention: “It’s so much big teams of guys, in costumes, running around and saving the world from big cosmic menace stuff… this one is much more folklore/mythology/horror, and not big team rushing into to do battle with whatever kind of stuff.”

The Hellboy reboot arrives in theatres on January 11, 2019. While this may be a departure from del Toro’s Hellboy movies, you can watch the trailers for those movies below.
