Some Very Special Guests Get Animated In LEGO Ghostbusters

Whether you’re feeling positive or negative about this summer’s Ghostbusters reboot, the franchise’s recent return to the limelight has made one thing clear: the past three decades have done little to dull the impact of the original film’s iconic imagery. This is made abundantly clear in LEGO Ghostbusters, an impressive new video from Digital Wizards Studios that offers a condensed re-telling of the 1984 classic—with some very special guests.

Explaining this video on YouTube, Digital Wizards Studios makes it clear that this was an enormously ambitious, time-consuming undertaking. “Eight artists with a combined collection of over $100,000 of LEGO bricks spent 2000 hours over the last five months,” the company explains, adding that they spent the bulk of their time “building, animating, lighting, compositing, and composing.”

To give you a better sense of the challenges involved, the opening shot alone took 12 hours to set up and six hours to animate. Fortunately, the animators had help from their families: their wives voiced several characters and one of their 10-year-old daughters donned a Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man costume.

While Ghostbusters fans are likely to be captivated by the first half, fans of everything else will have their patience rewarded in the second half. Special guests include characters from Doctor Who, Friday the 13th, Jurassic Park, A Nightmare on Elm St., Scooby Doo, The Simpsons, and Star Wars, not to mention a who’s who of superheroes.
