Everything We Know About Kong: Skull Island
Last month, we reported that Jurassic World co-writer Derek Connolly would be taking over writing duties for the latest King Kong flick, which will serve as a new origin story for the big hairy guy and will be directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts. Though we can just picture Kong going toe to toe with an Indominus Rex, this plot synopsis revealed by Deadline makes no mention of even a single genetically enhanced dino. At any rate, here’s what it’s going to be about:
“The story is about a man (Tom Hiddleston) who travels to the mythical island and home of the king of the apes. A team of explorers ventures inside what they find to be a treacherous island. The story is said to honor the King Kong lore but in a different time period. This project has been a priority for Legendary Pictures, whose John Jashni and Thomas Tull are producing along with Mary Parent.”
Exactly what time period that is has yet to be announced, but we’re going to take a wild guess and say this is going to be a more contemporary tale.
In more recent news, that very same Deadline piece also mentions John Goodman has joined the growing cast, which also boasts the aforementioned Hiddleston, Brie Larson (who’s in the upcoming film Room, which won the People’s Choice Award at TIFF last week), Samuel L. Jackson, Tobey Kebbell, Jason Mitchell, Corey Hawkins, and John C. Reilly.
No stranger to being a complete badass on screen (as frequently demonstrated by the Coen brothers), Goodman will play Randa, a government official who will lead the expedition on the island.
And for those of us who just want to see Kong fight an über dinosaur, The A.V. Club reports that Warner Bros. will distribute the film, which could very well lead to another King Kong vs. Godzilla face-off. If you haven’t witnessed the 1962 original grudge match, do that now, because there’s nothing quite as glorious as seeing the king of the apes shove a giant tree into the king of the monsters’ mouth.
Kong: Skull Island is expected to shoot later this year and terrorize audiences March 10, 2017.
