Jake Gyllenhaal Is Ready For His Superhero Close-Up

With very few exceptions, most of Hollywood’s A-list stars have found their way into a superhero movie or two over the last decade. One of the only major holdouts has been Jake Gyllenhaal, a rare actor whose preference for serious dramatic roles is actually reflected in his career choices.

Sure, every now and then, he finds himself in blockbuster territory (The Day After Tomorrow, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Life), but his overwhelming preference is for character-driven dramas like Prisoners, Nightcrawler, and Stronger. With that in mind, it may come as a surprise that Gyllenhaal is currently circling a major role in Marvel’s untitled sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor is in serious talks to play Mysterio, the villain created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1964. Also known as Quentin Beck, this criminal mastermind uses special effects to create illusions, break the law, and generally frustrate Spider-Man. While this will be Mysterio’s first movie appearance, there’s a longstanding rumour that Sam Raimi planned to include the character in his unrealized Spider-Man 4. If this film had reached the screen, Raimi planned to give the colourful role to a very different actor: Evil Dead veteran Bruce Campbell.

The Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel arrives in theatres on July 5, 2019. Check out the trailer for its predecessor below.
