5 Signs You Should See Insidious: Chapter 3
Following the success of Insidious and Insidious: Chapter 2, the franchise returns with a prequel that drops some of the central cast members (Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne), but leaves just about everything else in place.
Here are five signs you might enjoy going along for the ride.
You’re a James Wan fan
This reason may seem counterintuitive, as director James Wan was too busy with Furious 7 to direct Insidious: Chapter 3 (he produced and makes a cameo), but the film marks the directorial debut of Wan’s secret weapon: screenwriter Leigh Whannell (Saw, Dead Silence, Insidious).
You’re a Lynne Shaye fan
One of the more unique presences in any ongoing franchise, Lynne Shaye delivers another memorably idiosyncratic performance in Insidious: Chapter 3. Fans will be especially impressed by a crowd-pleasing one-liner that had the audience at my screening in stitches.
You like your victims vulnerable
Still unsettled by the death of her mother, Quinn Brenner (Stefanie Scott) spends much of the film bed-ridden in a cast and neck brace. If nothing else, this puts her in a prime position to be mercilessly tormented by the film’s central ghoul.
You like to jump
Insidious: Chapter 3 isn’t the most original or groundbreaking horror film you’ll see this year, but there are at least 20 big scares determined to make you jump. The audience at my screening dutifully obliged.
You like to laugh
It takes a while for the Spectral Sightings duo (played by Whannell and Angus Sampson) to appear with their usual dose of comic relief, but even before they appear, Insidious: Chapter 3 delivers a few memorable (if not altogether intentional) laughs. The behaviour of Dermot Mulroney’s clueless dad is especially head-scratching… and amusing.
