The First Trailer For Independence Day: Resurgence Has Crash-Landed On Earth
In the summer of 1996, Independence Day was the working definition of a blockbuster. Grossing over $800 million worldwide—which is significantly more when adjusted for inflation—it became the highest grossing film of the year and a no-brainer candidate for a sequel. But for reasons that aren’t entirely clear, two decades came and went without a second chapter.
Arriving with a title worthy of a Divergent sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence reunites original cast members Vivica A. Fox, Jeff Goldblum, and Bill Pullman with director Roland Emmerich (The Day After Tomorrow, 2012). The original film played a crucial role in making Will Smith an international superstar, but he passed on the sequel, making room for franchise newcomers like Liam Hemsworth, Joey King, and It Follows‘ Maika Monroe. The new trailer for Resurgence keeps explanations to a minimum, but it reveals no fewer than six crucial facts.
1. President Whitmore is going through a Santa Claus phase
2. Jeff Goldblum is back in space
3. A Titanic-sized UFO is in crisis
4. It crash-lands on Earth
5. Fortunately, humans are now equipped with better firepower on the ground
6. And even better firepower in the air
Independence Day: Resurgence invades theatres June 24th, 2016, sorta close to July 4. Watch the brand-new trailer below:
