Is The Goodnight Mommy Trailer The Scariest Of All Time?
Let’s get this out of the way right now: the trailer for Goodnight Mommy is really effin’ creepy. And unsettling. And chilling.
The German horror flick centres on twin boys whose mother returns to their secluded country home after having undergone cosmetic surgery. But Mama’s a little… different underneath all that weird bandaging, and the understandably freaked-out boys start to suspect she may not be the person she once was.
But is this really the scariest trailer ever made? Before we continue, take a look and see what you think (but turn the lights on first—don’t say I didn’t, say I didn’t warn ya).
So. A lot of headlines on the internet will have you believe this is the most frightening trailer ever. And they make some strong points — there’s a lot of haunting, confusing stuff going on here. For one, it doesn’t use the predictable “evil twins” trope; rather, it’s the mom who’s the creep here. And speaking of the mummy-looking mommy in question, just one look at her is enough to give you the heebie-jeebies. Plus, we never even hear her speak (CAN she even speak? We know she can swallow cockroaches, at the very least). And then there’s just the entire eerie ambiance that sets an unnerving, but not gruesome, tone. While it looks like Goodnight Mommy will deliver on giving us mad nightmares, we’d argue it’s hardly the scariest trailer of all time. So we’ve rounded up five examples from the past decade that we think make Goodnight Mommy look like child’s play. Pro tip: you might want to keep those lights on.
The Strangers (2008)
If you thought the most f–ked up thing to happen to Liv Tyler is being on the way-too-confusing show The Leftovers, just watch this ish. The second that “inspired by true events” tag pops up, you know something freaky’s about to go down. This one’s got it all: a defective record player, a creaky swing in the dark, and masks. Cringe, cringe, cringe.
The Conjuring (2013)
You’re basically squirming on the edge of your seat, and then… THAT CLAP THOUGH.
Dead Silence (2007)
Ventriloquists. Clowns. Dolls. Puppets. It’s all here, folks. Oh, and then there’s poor Donnie Wahlberg and Ryan Kwanten (a.k.a. the dreamy dude from “True Blood” and that too-soon-forgotten Zac Efron show “Summerland”) getting threatened with tongue removal. TONGUE REMOVAL!
Human Centipede (2010)
Is the twisted thing this demented surgeon’s trying to do even medically possible? Doesn’t matter; it’s terrifying and gross in every possible way.
Evil Dead (2013)
1. NOPE. NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE.
So what do you think? Is Goodnight Mommy the scariest, or does one of these other trailers out-terrorify it? Sound off in the comments!
