Original Ghostbusters Director Says There’s Only One New Ghostbusters Movie

The last six months has been a golden age for fans of Ghostbusters rumours. Every couple days, a new variation on the same story emerges, usually involving Channing Tatum and a blockbuster-friendly directing team (the Russos, Lord/Miller, etc.). But if you have a more monogamous understanding of movie franchises and are happy to focus on one gang of Ghostbusters at a time, you might be getting a little frustrated. Plus, isn’t the idea of passing the proton pack to a female cast undermined by the constant threat of male rivals?

Regardless of how you feel about this confusion, it has been nearly impossible to pin down what’s really happening with the franchise(s). Hoping to clear things up, Ivan Reitman (director of the original, producer of the Paul Feig reboot) has released a no nonsense statement. “There has been a lot of excitement recently about what is happening with the Ghostbusters franchise,” he says. “As the producer of the new Ghostbusters film, I feel the need to clarify. There is only one new Ghostbusters movie and that is the Paul Feig directed version coming next July, presently filming and going fantastically. The rest is just noise.”

In other words, the only movie that counts is the one he’s currently working on. Of course, the “noise” is likely to continue, thanks in part to past statements by Reitman himself. While he’d probably like to forget about those statements (for the time being anyway), this is what he told Deadline back in March: “We want to expand the Ghostbusters universe in ways that will include different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment… it’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies.”
