Game Of Thrones Is Maybe Bringing This Long-Lost Character Back For Season 7
These days, it’s really hard to keep things a secret, especially when you’re an actor on a show like Game of Thrones. Just ask Kit Harington. Photos of Harington out and about in Belfast last summer all but confirmed Jon Snow’s survival in Season 6. So when Joe Dempsie was spotted at the Belfast airport on Tuesday, fans
correctly immediately assumed that the actor was en route to the Game of Thrones set to film scenes for Season 7.
Ummm. Yes, please.
This is a huge deal for several reasons, the most paramount being GENDRY IS ALIVE. We haven’t seen Arya’s friend Gendry since the end of Season 3, when Davos sent him off in that infamous row boat in order to save him from Melisandre’s bloody machinations. His lingering absence from the show has turned into something of a joke among Game of Thrones fans, with the entire internet seemingly asking: What the hell happened to Gendry? Even Dempsie himself has acknowledged it.
Now it looks like we might get the long-awaited reunion between Arya and Gendry that we’ve been waiting for. More importantly, Gendry is King Robert’s last-surviving bastard, and with the Baratheon line pretty much extinct at this point—Renly had no heirs, Shireen is dead, and Tommen was never even a Baratheon—Gendry is the only living heir to the former King. And to Westeros. However, he’s still a bastard, and to ascend to the Iron Throne he’d have to have the current king legitimize him—and Cersei of the House Lannister, the First of Her Name, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Protector of the Seven Kingdoms will do no such thing.
So if Gendry does return to the action in Season 7 (and this is still an “if” situation), we don’t expect him to be making any moves to the throne. Instead, there are three likely scenarios: one, he runs into Arya in the Riverlands on her way north to Winterfell; two, he comes across the recently exiled Melisandre on her way south; or three, he encounters Brienne of Tarth and Pod at the inn at the crossroads in the Riverlands, which is what goes down in George R.R. Martin’s A Feast For Crows. However, since show runners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are officially in uncharted territory in Season 7, the possibilities for Gendry’s return are truly endless. For all we know he could still be rowing the next time we see him.
