New Fantastic Beasts Footage Introduces Unlikely Hero—And More Magical Creatures

J.K. Rowling and Eddie Redmayne take us behind the magic of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in this newly released featurette starring the wizarding world’s most unlikely hero, Newt Scamander.

“My heroes are always people who feel themselves to be set apart, stigmatized, or othered,” Rowling says. “That’s at the heart of most of what I write, and it’s certainly at the heart of this movie.”

The featurette not only gives us a glimpse into Newt’s magical case—where he keeps all of the rare magical creatures he finds on his global expeditions, like this adorably mischievous Niffler—but also some insight into the Hufflepuff’s career as a magizoologist. Just look at this sassy little Bowtruckle that refuses to smile for Newt:

Newt also gets a brief lesson about the wizarding community in America from Porpentina “Tina” Goldstein (Katherine Waterston), an employee of the Magical Congress of the United States of America, and we also see a No-Maj named Jacob (Dan Fogler) accidentally release the creatures from Newt’s broken magical case. Relations between wizards and No-Majs are practically nonexistent in America due to the wizarding community’s mounting fear of persecution—and Newt’s missing horde of magical creatures is not helping to salvage it. The fate of Wizard-No Maj relations literally rests on Newt’s shoulders.

Holy Hufflepuff, that sounds like a lot of pressure.
