Watch Ewan McGregor Talk About His Unusual Force Awakens Cameo
It’s been over a month since Star Wars: The Force Awakens premiered, and the newest edition of the sci-fi saga hasn’t slowed down yet. The film’s been praised by critics and fans alike and beat out Avatar as the highest-grossing movie in North American history.
Last night, Ewan McGregor guest-starred on Jimmy Kimmel Live to speak about his new movie, Jane Got a Gun, and ended up discussing his role in the new Star Wars. But if you missed him onscreen, don’t worry; only his voice was in the film.
“I recorded a line for it. It was very late in the day. I’d been waiting for the call to come for two years. Maybe they’ve lost my agent’s phone number or something,” the Scottish actor joked. He then explained how director J.J. Abrams called him and wanted him to be a part of the movie—and ended up mixing McGregor’s voice with that of the late Alec Guinness, the OG Obi-Wan Kenobi.
A Star Wars veteran, McGregor played the younger version of Guinness’ Obi-Wan Kenobi in Episodes I-III, so it only makes sense their voices were blended together for Obi-Wan’s one line. The dialogue was simply, “Rey, these are your first steps,” and according to McGregor, the filmmakers found old footage of Guiness-as-Obi-Wan saying “afraid,” and just cut it down to make it sound like “Rey.”
“So Alec Guinness is saying ’Rey’ and then I say, ’These are your first steps,’ McGregor told Kimmel. Check out the full clip below.
