E3 2016: Friday The 13th: The Game Takes Us Inside The Mind Of A Madman
With a Jason Voorhees origin movie on the way, you might be feeling some skepticism about the franchise, but that’s no reason to underestimate the long-gestating video game currently gearing up for an October release. Following a successful Kickstarter campaign last year, Friday the 13th: The Game is almost a reality, complete with contributions from composer Harry Manfredini, make-up effects legend Tom Savini, director Sean Cunningham, and longtime Jason, Kane Hodder. As we enter the home stretch leading up to the release, Gun Media has released five minutes of footage—and this game appears to be completely deranged. In other words, it’s exactly what fans are looking for.
As The A.V. Club points out, both Jason and the location in this video bring to mind Friday The 13th, Part III—minus those wacky 3D flourishes—and the new game differs from the notorious Nintendo misfire in that the map actually seems to makes sense. As Jason wanders around, dispatching his victims with brute force alone, we hear Mrs. Voorhees’ voice inside his head, propelling him from one violent encounter to the next. Allowing us to experience events exclusively from Jason’s perspective (one of several game play options), while keeping his prey completely anonymous, this game offers a uniquely unsettling glimpse inside the mind of a madman.
While the game doesn’t ship until October—just in time for Halloween—you can place your order now at F13game.com. Not sure you can handle Jason’s latest onslaught? Get a better sense of his favourite pastime in the video below.
