Christmas Comes Early With Your First Look At The Doctor Who Christmas Special

Fruit cake, egg nog, carolling, that annual passive-aggressive fight with your sister-in-law—all time-honoured holiday traditions we look forward to, but the best part of Christmas is the gift we get each year from the BBC: The Doctor Who Christmas Special. A new clip from this year’s upcoming episode was released at New York’s Comic Con today and it looks rad. Here’s why:

First: the special is going to feature Canadian actor Justin Chatwin (Orphan Black) in the role of a Marvel/DC-type superhero. Peter Capaldi has compared the character to Christopher Reeves’ Superman. A photo of Chatwin in costume and cape was posted to the official Doctor Who Twitter account today. Check it out:

Second: this behind the scenes/in front of the scenes/green screen clip from the making of the new special has more of Chatwin and also shows the return of Matt Lucas—in a… wise man costume? Points to anyone who figures out what that’s about. Watch:

The superhero-themed episode is titled “The Return of Doctor Mysterio” and, if there’s a superhero, that must mean the Doctor is destined to go up against a supervillain. Start your countdown to Christmas now (or, like, the day after Halloween maybe).
