Daisy Ridley Has Seen Clips Of Episode VIII And She’s Very Excited
If you’re a lifelong Star Wars fan, there’s a good chance you’re beside yourself with joy, as the franchise is at one of the most triumphant points in its four-decade history. Last year’s The Force Awakens emerged as one of the most popular films in the series and Rogue One is earning unqualified raves, with many critics invoking series high-water mark The Empire Strikes Back. But those two developments barely scratch the surface because next December marks the release of Episode VIII, arguably the most anticipation-worthy Star Wars movie since Empire, thanks in no small part to the meticulous efforts of writer-director Rian Johnson (Looper).
Since Johnson’s obsessive, detail-oriented approach extends to all aspects of production, we’re unlikely to see any advance footage until it’s been polished to perfection—but he did extend this unique courtesy to star Daisy Ridley. “I watched a sizzle reel,” she told Empire. “I went to go see Rian in the edit, and that was very [makes excited noise]… Rian sounds very happy. It’s very, very exciting. Rian doesn’t love showing stuff. I’ve seen bits and bobs, but he likes it to be done. So I think probably the first time I see it will be when it’s fully done. I don’t think anyone will see an early cut outside of the main editing team.”
In another interesting development (that reflects Johnson’s unique imagination), the director visited Austin’s Butt-Numb-A-Thon—an annual 24-hour movie marathon commemorating the birthday of Aint It Cool News’s Harry Knowles—over the weekend, and he gave everyone in attendance a cameo in Episode VIII!
So, @rianjohnson just pumped up the BNAT audience by having us cheer & hiss, recorded it. “Next year you’ll all be in a Star Wars movie.”
