Christopher Nolan’s Next Film Is Out Next Month
Over the last decade, every new Christopher Nolan movie has been treated as a major event, accompanied by months of hype and anticipation. His next film will be a rare exception—for several very good reasons. Premiering in August, Nolan’s Quay is a short documentary about twin filmmaking team Stephen and Timothy Quay. While they have dabbled in live action feature filmmaking, the Quays are best known for their distinctive animated shorts, which were compiled in a 2007 DVD collection, Phantom Museums: The Short Films of the Quay Brothers.
Joining forces with Zeitgeist Films—the company behind the DVD—Nolan has organized a screening series known as The Quay Brothers – on 35mm. Appropriately enough, and as the title suggests, this series brings together two of Nolan’s twin passions: 35mm and the Quay Brothers. From August 19th to August 25th, New York’s Film Forum will screen three of the duo’s most acclaimed shorts (Street of Crocodiles, The Comb, In Absentia), along with Nolan’s new documentary.
As an added bonus, Nolan will appear live in conversation with the Quays at both evening shows on opening night: Wednesday, August 19th. You can buy tickets online at the Film Forum website for this rare opportunity to see these Quay classics in their original celluloid glory. In the meantime, sample their haunting sensibility below in a low quality YouTube rendering of Street of Crocodiles.
