Andrew Garfield Wanted Spider-Man In The MCU

When Sony scrapped their plans to make a third Spider-Man movie with Andrew Garfield, they also dashed any hope that the actor would get a chance to mix things up with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As Marvel and Sony prep a Garfield-free Spider-Man movie in the MCU, some fans of the franchise are undoubtedly disappointed, but the actor claims to be relatively accepting—even though he was one of the loudest voices in favour of this crossover. “I’ve been petitioning to hook up with Marvel since the beginning,” he told Uproxx, before deflecting any charges of disappointment with some unexpected enthusiasm. “I’m really glad they’re finally doing it.”

For those wondering where Garfield might have gone next with the character, he explains that he was already work-shopping ideas with screenwriter Alex Kurtzman when the plug was pulled. Hoping to “build upon where we left off with this deep, desperate moment with Gwen,” he says his next Spider-Man movie would have gone to some heavy places. “I was really excited to kind of explore it and be involved on the ground level like that,” he explained. “But, anyway, it wasn’t meant to be.”

Asked to elaborate on the circumstances surrounding his departure, Garfield made it clear that he was never in talks to play Peter Parker in the new series. (Marvel and Sony decided to take the role in a younger direction.) However, he chose not to reveal any further details. “To be honest, all the ins and outs of what happened is a more tender conversation that maybe I don’t want to talk about in public in a press situation. But all I can say is that I’m stoked to go and watch a Marvel film of Spider-Man.”
