Get Ready For An R-Rated Hobbit

20 minutes can do a lot to change a film. Take, for example, Warner’s forthcoming extended three-disc Blu-ray and five-disc DVD editions of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Originally rated PG-13 in the US (PG here in Ontario), on November 17 fans will be able to watch—nay, experience—the 164-minute R-rated cut of the final instalment in the Hobbit trilogy. We’re guessing this new rating has more to do with the film containing harsher violence rather than severe profanity and hardcore nudity.

For those curious—or those who enjoy a good laugh—the Ontario Film Review Board’s current content advisory lists the following reasons why the theatrical Hobbit film is only suitable to watch with the company of a responsible adult:

-Scenes containing some grotesque images in a fantasy, comedic or historic context

-Use of expletives

-Limited use of slurs

-Scenes that may cause a child brief anxiety, or fear

-Limited embracing and kissing

-Tobacco use

-Restrained portrayals of non-graphic violence

Courageous fans planning on picking up the extended version will be getting a lot more than just gory decapitations. The set also boasts nine hours of special features, including:

-Commentary with director/producer/writer Peter Jackson and co-producer/writer Philippa Boyens

-The Appendices – The Appendices Parts XI and XII showcase a chronological history of the filming of The Battle of the Five Armies, documenting the work done on set chronologically through the three shooting blocks and in the world of its digital effects

-New Zealand: Home of Middle-earth – Part 3
