“The Gift”: How This Week’s Game of Thrones Differs from the Books

The Sand Snakes made their claim on Bronn during last night’s Game of Thrones, and Myrcella made her claim to Dorne and Trystan Martell. Jaime’s failed endeavor to bring Myrcella home will send Cersei through the roof. Guess it’s a good thing the High Sparrow has the Queen Mother on a timeout.

Here’s a breakdown of how things went down in “The Gift” compared to how things played out in the books.
Flayed and Frozen

How it went down on the show: Just days after reciting her vows to Ramsay, Sansa turned to Theon (Reek), asking for help to escape Winterfell and her abusive husband. Theon remained loyal to Ramsay and confessed Sansa’s plan to light a candle in the broken tower to send a signal to her friends in the North. Ramsay—not one to respond well to betrayal—flayed Sansa’s Northern friend and put her on display as a reminder of who’s in charge.

How it went down in the books: Theon was terrified of his master, but that didn’t stop him from trying to help Jeyne Poole (Ramsay’s real wife posing as Arya). There was never anything to do with a candle since Brienne of Tarth wasn’t anywhere near Winterfell, but that doesn’t mean Theon didn’t have help inside the walls of Winterfell.

Broken Vows

How it went down on the show: A couple of Crows were trying to have their way with Gilly when Sam the Slayer showed up to try and save her. Sam wasn’t much help and ended up bloody and beaten. Ghost appeared from the darkness just in time to save them. Later, Gilly was helping Sam clean his cuts when the Wildling decided to mount Sam the Slayer, causing him to break his vows as a man of the Night’s Watch.

How it went down in the books: Sam and Gilly weren’t at Castle Black anymore and Gilly was never attacked. They were sailing on a boat to Oldtown with Maester Aemon. That’s when Maester Aemon died and Sam the Slayer truly became a man.

The Lion, the Bear, and the Dragon

How it went down on the show: After being sold into slavery, Jorah and Tyrion were among the first to visit the newly opened Fighting Pits in Meereen. During the initial slaughter, Jorah noticed Daenerys watching in disgust. The Knight took it upon himself to join the battle and reign as champion. When Jorah discarded his mask, Dany asked that he be removed immediately. He explained he had brought her a gift, and Tyrion revealed himself as that gift.

How it went down in the books: Jorah and Tyrion were sold into slavery and they did share the same master, but their roles were quite different. Tyrion sold for more and sold as a performer, whereas Jorah was a fighter but his price was kept low due to his rebellious attitude. Daenerys never saw Tyrion or Jorah during the reopening of the pits. They performed. They moved on.

Love My Poison

How it went down on the show: Bronn and the Sand Snakes are being kept in the dungeons of Dorne for their failed attacks on Myrcella. While awaiting punishment, Bronn and Tyene Sand started to show interest in each other. Tyene was using her body to draw Bronn in, but in truth, she was causing the blood to rush to his head, activating a poison she had previously infected him with. Just as he was about to breathe his last breath, Tyene provided an antidote to counteract the poison.

How it went down in the books: Bronn never made it to Dorne. The Sand Snakes were taken prisoner for their efforts to remove Myrcella from Dorne and to make her their Queen puppet. The girls weren’t held in cells, but cozy rooms in the Tower of the Sun in Sunspear.
