Ranking All The Extras On The Force Awakens Blu-ray

Chances are you saw the ridiculously-anticipated seventh episode in the Star Wars saga at least twice in theatres, but is that going to stop you from rewatching it on Blu-ray this week? Hell no! After reliving the magic from the comfort of your comfy couch (it still looks and sounds phenomenal, surprising no one), I highly recommend popping in disc two and digging into those juicy extras. Here’s a handy ranking of what’s on tap in the special features department. And here’s how you can win a free copy!

1. Secrets of the Force Awakens: A Cinematic Journey

disney-900

The main extras attraction, this four-part, hour-long doc offers a comprehensive behind-the-scenes overview of the film, from pre-production all the way up to its release. Featuring interviews from heavy-hitters like director J.J. Abrams, co-writer Lawrence Kasdan, star Harrison Ford, and tonnes more talent (including George Lucas!), it’s the second best reason to pick up the latest Star Wars on Blu.

2. Deleted Scenes

Number two on the goodies list are six deleted scenes that amount to roughly four minutes of footage. While none of them are essential to telling the story, they’re pretty rad to watch on the side, and also prove Abrams did a fine job of trimming the fat to make his film feel more focused. Some scenes do offer a little more meat for the characters, notably Finn sparing a villager and Kylo Ren searching the crashed Millennium Falcon on Starkiller Base.

3. ILM: The Visual Magic of the Force

Yes, The Force Awakens is a refreshingly tactile movie full of inventive practical effects, but it also boasts some of the most impressive digital effects ever, all thanks to Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light & Magic. In fact, this eight-minute doc does a pretty bang-up of explaining how they complemented the film’s live action effects with some CG magic.

4. Blueprint of a Battle: The Snow Fight

Fun fact: As evinced in this 7-minute behind-the-scenes look, the film’s climatic lightsaber fight between Rey, Finn, and Kylo Ren wasn’t shot in a legit wintry forest, but rather a studio dressed up to look like one. We also get some choice insights on the scene’s impressive choreography.

5. Building BB-8

Everyone’s favourite droid (sorry, R2) gets his own six-minute extra, in which we learn more about BB-8’s practical construction and even how Abrams came up with his/her/its lovable look.

6. Crafting Creatures

This 10-minute featurette gives us a better look at the oddballs we met at Maz’s castle, plus a few other nifty characters from Jakku, and old faves like Nein Nunb.

7. John Williams: The Seventh Symphony

Multiple award-winning composer John Williams (who’s scored every Star Wars movie to date) appears in this seven-minute clip that gives us a glimpse at how he put together the film’s Oscar-nominated score.

8. The Story Awakens: The Table Read

While we’re only given a four-minute glimpse of that special day everyone gathered around for a first full cast read-through, watching the whole film this way is probably too much to ask for—so we’ll take what we can get!

9. Force for Change

Am I a bad person for putting this at the bottom of the list? This last featurette focuses on the fans who generously donated to Lucasfilm’s Force for Change charity. Great cause, so-so bonus feature.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens arrives on Blu-ray tomorrow and is out now on Digital HD. Check out the trailer one more time before bringing it home.
