The Han Solo Movie Is Closing In On Some Co-Stars

Expectations for the Han Solo movie from directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie) are through the roof and the directors aren’t taking their responsibilities lightly. In addition to prepping all aspects of the film, they’ve spent much of 2016 ensuring that they have just the right cast for the film. According to Variety, they’ve made significant progress since casting Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo back in May. For one, Donald Glover has emerged as the frontrunner to play Lando Calrissian.

In addition, it looks like Lord and Miller have settled on a trio of finalists for the female lead, namely Naomi Scott (The Martian, Power Rangers), Tessa Thompson (Creed, Selma), and Zoe Kravitz  (the Divergent series, Mad Max: Fury Road). With production set to start early next year, these actresses are currently meeting with the directors in London, submitting to the kind of gruelling testing process that Ehrenreich barely survived earlier this year. If you think the actor has exaggerated the challenges of landing the role, Miller is here to set you straight.

Speaking to USA Today, the director makes it clear that they did everything possible to separate the men (Ehrenreich) from the boys (Jack O’Connell, Miles Teller, etc.). “That guy pretty much went through an audition pentathlon,” Miller said of Ehrenreich. “It was like an acting steeplechase. He went against a lot of very strong competitors and was very consistently the guy, from minute one. He was the first person who auditioned out of thousands, and just out of the box, made you believe that someday he’d grow into the character we know.”

If Lord and Miller manage to pick the rest of the cast in a timely fashion, their untitled Han Solo movie will arrive in theatres on May 25, 2018.
