J.J. Abrams Knows Which Woman Should Take On Star Wars Next

If you’re one of those people for whom the very mention of Ava DuVernay’s name causes automatic fist pump on-set—like the moment her “shero” Barbie sold out earlier this week because sometimes people can be cool—we’ve got some intriguing news for you.

The beloved Selma director, who decided against helming Marvel’s Black Panther project earlier this year due to creative differences with the studio, is The Force Awakens helmer J.J. Abrams’ first choice for who should pick up where he leaves off with the reawakened Star Wars franchise. Yes.

Abrams chatted up Nerdist in an interview released yesterday and said that his “knee-jerk reaction” to the question of which female writer-director he’d like to see journey to a galaxy far, far away for the next episode, is Ava.

“I think [she] would just kill it,” he said. “She is as much a fan of genre movies, and hearing her talk about not just ’Star Wars,’ but hearing her talk about those kinds of films is evidence that she would just kill it.”

Abrams also pointed to her work in the 2014 biopic Selma as an example of her particular keenness for “sophisticated and humane” pictures, saying “if she can do that story that well, there’s no question she’d kill this movie.”

First, cue the slow clap. Second, someone get Lucasfilm on the phone because this needs to happen.
