New Star Trek Beyond Trailer Raises The Stakes

When the first trailer for Star Trek Beyond arrived in December, reactions were extremely mixed. Even co-writer Simon Pegg acknowledged that it left something to be desired. “It was very action-packed,” he explained at the time. “It was surprising. I find it to be kind of the marketing people saying, ‘Everybody come and see this film, it’s full of action and fun,’ when there’s a lot more to it than that.”

In spite of this criticism, Pegg has lashed out at the trailer’s other critics, particularly Star Trek veterans and famous fans. In a recent Wired profile of Star Trek Beyond director Justin Lin, Pegg said he was “disappointed that Wil Wheaton, Patton Oswalt, and George Takei were slagging off the trailer because they know a finished trailer is never a reflection of the finished film.” He didn’t stop there, imploring them to “get a f*cking clue” because “it’s really good fun: thrilling and heartfelt.”

With all that in mind, the stakes are high for the new Star Trek Beyond trailer. Reactions are bound to be divided, so we’ll let you judge for yourself, but here’s the official (and very brief) plot synopsis from Paramount: “The Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test.”

Star Trek Beyond beams into theatres July 22. Check out the new trailer and poster below.
