Star Trek 3 Is Different Without J.J. Abrams On Set, Says Zachary Quinto

J.J. Abrams brought Star Trek to a whole new world of fans when he rebooted the original ’60s TV show into a series of pulse-pounding action movies. But although he’s moved on to Star Wars: The Force Awakens these days, the third instalment is in the incredibly good hands of director Justin Lin, who’s best known for his incredible work on the Fast and Furious series.

But what’s it like no longer having Abrams on the Star Trek set? While speaking to MTV News during a press event for Hitman: Agent 47, Enterprise Science Officer Zachary Quinto (aka Spock) remarked that things are definitely much different without him—but that Lin more than up to the challenge of directing Star Trek Beyond.

“Invariably there’s going to be a different vibe when you remove someone as gregarious and outgoing and talented as J.J.,” he said. “But Justin has come in with this really interesting and confident energy that’s a little bit more reserved and a little bit quieter, but also very powerful and really sure-handed. He knows exactly what he wants this movie to look like and that’s really exciting.”

Quinto was also enthusiastic about co-star Simon Pegg’s involvement in co-writing the latest movie. Not only is Pegg known for his knowledge and passion for all things nerdy, but he also plays Scotty, the chief engineer of the U.S.S. Enterprise, in the previous two Trek films.

“It’s been incredible to have Simon be so integrally involved in the story because he knows us all so well and he knows our characters all so well,” he said. “We don’t have to walk very far if we have any questions or concerns about stuff in the script!”

No word on how those conversations actually go down, but I’m going to choose to believe it involves Simon Pegg exasperatedly telling the rest of the cast that the script “cannae take much more of this, Captain!”
