Find Out What The New Spider-Man Title Really Means

The release of Spider-Man: Homecoming is still a year away, but fans are already feeling optimistic, thanks to the character’s memorable appearance in Captain America: Civil War. Long separated from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spidey is finally back with his old Marvel pals at Disney. While Sony will still be involved with the upcoming film, there’s no need to fear creative tensions, as studio chairman Tom Rothman recognizes the expertise of his new creative partners. “We’re really, really fortunate on this because Marvel and Kevin Feige have really embraced the character and no one knows him as well as Marvel,” he told IGN earlier this week. “It is another crown jewel of Sony’s for sure.”

For those wondering what the title Spider-Man: Homecoming is all about, Rothman offered a logical explanation. “The name is a double entendre on purpose,” he explained. “It’s relevant to the story because it takes place in high school and there is a… homecoming dance. I’ve actually seen the dailies of it because we already did the high school shooting of it in the first couple weeks and it’s fantastic. But it’s also a homecoming to Marvel. And a homecoming to the cinematic universe that Spider-Man belongs in.”

While Rothman speaks highly of the whole Spider-Man series, he’s especially excited about the youthful new approach that director Jon Watts and 20-year-old star Tom Holland are bringing to the table. “This is that character in all his youthful complications,” he said. “And ‘I have to save the world and get my chemistry homework done, and which am I going to do?’ I truly can’t wait ’til next summer.”

Spider-Man: Homecoming arrives in theatres on July 7, 2017. For more of Rothman’s enthusiasm, watch the interview below.
