Spider-Man Almost Teamed Up With Marvel Studios, According To Leaked Sony E-Mails

Spidey was courted for a role in 'Captain America: Civil War.'

Remember those rumors that Sony and Marvel Studios were working on a deal to bring Spider-Man into the Avengers’ universe? It turns out that there’s truth to that talk.

The Wall Street Journal has published a revealing report about Sony’s Spider-Man plans, based on information gleaned from e-mails between Sony executives leaked online by hackers this week.

Among the revelations: Marvel Studios tried and failed to secure Spidey’s involvement in “Captain America: Civil War.” Peter Parker plays a major role in the “Civil War” comic story, so it’s no surprise to hear that Marvel wanted him in their movie; as of now, it doesn’t look likely to happen.

Further, as recently as October, Sony was reportedly interested in pursuing a new trilogy of “Spider-Man” movies, produced by Marvel Studios, but with Sony still retaining “creative control, marketing and distribution.”

According to the Wall Street Journal, talks between Sony and Marvel “eventually broke down,” and now Sony is focused on its own Spider-Man plansplans that are said to include “Sinister Six” and a female-led spinoff, according to previous reports. New to the mix is a developing “animated Spider-Man comedy that would be produced by Chris Miller and Phil Lord,” the duo behind “The LEGO Movie” and the “Jump Street” comedies, according to WSJ.

The reasons that we have all this information to chew on today are chilling, to put it lightly, what with the massive security breach at Sony. And yet, the toothpaste is out of the tube — or, the web-shooter fluid is out of the web-shooter, as it were. What do you make of all this Spider-Man talk?
