Simon Pegg Talks About Idris Elba’s ‘Interesting, Complex’ Star Trek Villain

st-simon-pegg

Nerds, bow down to your king: Simon Pegg, currently writing and appearing in Star Trek Beyond and confirmed for a role in the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens, has spoken. And here’s what he has to say: Idris Elba is going to be cool as the villain in Beyond.

“It’s a really interesting, complex character,” Pegg told MTV News of Elba’s character at a press day for Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation ahead of that film’s release. (He reprises his role as agent Benji Dunn in the film, out this weekend.)

We shouldn’t expect to see anything like Benedict Cumberbatch’s creepy genius Kahn from Star Trek Into Darkness in Elba’s performance, however. His performance is all his own.

“Only because it would be a retread,” Pegg said. “What we don’t want to do is have the same kind of villain with the same motivation.”

Though he was cagey about what, exactly, he could share about his part in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, not able to share his character’s name or backstory, Pegg did offer an apology.

“I’m sorry I lied to you last time I saw you,” he said. “It wasn’t lying, it was lies by omission.”

There’s a good reason for it all, according to the actor.

“The NDA actually came with electrodes, which are pressed into the base of my skull,” he said. “I can’t tell you anything!”

What he can tell you, however, is who’s not in Star Wars: Daniel Craig. Despite rumors and jokes that the SPECTRE star would appear as a Stormtrooper, Pegg put the trope to rest once and for all.

“No, you won’t [see him],” he laughed.
