Scarlett Johansson Is Coming Back For More ‘Captain America,’ But Is She Friend Or Foe?

When Captain America and Iron Man wage “Civil War” on one another in 2016, there will be at least one more Avenger joining in on the fight.

During an appearance in China, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” directors Joe and Anthony Russo confirmed that Scarlett Johansson will be back in action as Black Widow in the upcoming sequel. It’s not the most surprising news, but it’s still a relief to officially know that the next “Cap” movie should have plenty of red in the ledger.

But what does this mean for “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Widow’s next scheduled appearance? The fact that she’s confirmed for “Captain America: Civil War” should tell us that ScarJo’s super-spy will be just fine during the second team-up of Earth’s mightiest heroes — well, alive, at least, if not exactly fine. James Spader’s string-hating robot could still inflict plenty of damage on Ms. Romanoff without ending her life.

Either way, the even bigger question is this: Whose side is Widow on? Based on the “Civil War” comics the movie takes its title from, Captain America and Iron Man are headed for a philosophical and physical battle over the legality of superheroes. Widow is a minor player in the “Civil War” comics, but she signs on for Iron Man’s cause. Can we expect it to play out the same way in the movies?

Given the close bond forged between Natasha and Steve Rogers in “Winter Soldier,” one would hope that they’ll stick together in the upcoming conflict. But don’t forget that before Natasha met Steve…

…she was in Tony Stark’s world, first.

It’s too early to say whether Black Widow will be Captain America’s friend or foe in the upcoming “Civil War.” All we can say for sure is that she’s back — and for now, that’s more than enough.

“Captain America: Civil War” hits on May 6, 2016.
