Ryan Reynolds Explains Deadpool’s ‘Muscular’ New Direction

We told you last month about the “scary fights” that inspired Ryan Reynolds to seek out a new director for Deadpool 2, eventually arriving at John Wick’s David Leitch. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly recently, Reynolds made it clear exactly why Leitch is the man for the job. “Everybody was just a fan of his work,” he said. “He’s just a guy who’s so muscular with his action. He also really understands those Deadpool sensibilities and where we need to take the franchise from here. And I love John Wick.”

Producer Simon Kinberg makes it clear that the priority on the sequel is to recapture the spirit of the original, not deliver a generic mainstream crowd-pleaser that’s bloated or watered-down. As he sees it, their philosophy is simple: bigger isn’t necessarily better. “We have to resist the temptation to make it bigger in scale and scope, which is normally what you do when you have a surprise hit movie,” he explained, adding that “the tone and the style and the humor” made Deadpool special, “not the explosions and the special effects.”

By keeping the budget relatively low, Kinberg and Reynolds believe they can keep the spirit of the original in tact—and that played an important role in their choice of director. As Reynolds sees it, John Wick is a case study in under-spending and over-delivering. “One of the things that David Leitch does that very few filmmakers can do these days is… make a movie on an ultra tight minimal budget look like it was shot for 10-15 times what it cost.”

According to Reynolds, Deadpool 2 is still in development, but if all goes according to plan, it should be in theatres on March 2, 2018. For a reminder of the franchise’s distinctive sensibilities, check out the trailer for the original below.
