The First Teaser For Pete’s Dragon Soars Onto Screens

Following Friday’s surprise poster reveal, Disney released the first teaser for their big budget reimagining of 1977 family flick Pete’s Dragon last night. While the majority of this 90-second clip focuses way more on Pete than his big, green, furry (?) buddy, the upshot looks to be a pretty fun and whimsical ride thanks to an impressive cast that includes Bryce Dallas Howard, Robert Redford, and Wes Bentley. Director David Lowrey also has a pretty good track record, having made 2013’s well-received Ain’t Them Bodies Saints and also serving as co-editor on one of the boldest and best films of the past decade, 2013’s Upstream Color.

We’re also totally on board for relative newcomer Oakes Fegley (Boardwalk Empire), who looks sufficiently feral for the part and also has the best name. Have a look at the teaser and see for yourself:

For cross referencing purposes, here’s the trailer for the very-different-looking 1977 original:

Disney also provided a handy synopsis in their press release, which you can read here:

For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.

And in case you missed it, here’s that poster we mentioned earlier:
