Aliens Descend On Earth In New Trailer For Arrival

Québécois filmmaker Denis Villeneuve is on a prolific roll that is virtually unheard of among Canadian filmmakers. While directors like Atom Egoyan and David Cronenberg have enjoyed periods of praise and productivity, they’ve never found the balance of acclaim, commercial success, and opportunity that has greeted Denis Villeneuve’s recent string of successes. In the last three years, he has delivered a pair of engrossing dramatic hits (Prisoners, Sicario) and signed on to direct Blade Runner 2, but he also found time to direct Arrival, a mysterious new alien movie arriving in theatres later this year.

Far from a typical science fiction film, Arrival has a sensibility that co-star Jeremy Renner describes as a blend of Stanley Kubrick and Steven Spielberg. That may get you thinking A.I., but the plot synopsis suggests a hybrid of 2001: A Space Odyssey and Close Encounters of the Third Kind: “When mysterious spacecraft touch down across the globe, an elite team—lead by expert linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams)—are brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers—and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity.”

Judging from the new trailer, here are a few more things you can expect from Arrival:

Tentacles

arrival1

Gravity-defying surrealism

arrival2

Explosive mishaps

arrival3

Military intervention

arrival4
