Matt Damon Will Finally Become Bourne Again Next Week

Jason-Bourne

MTV

After eight years away from the spy game, Matt Damon is returning to the man with only a name: Jason Bourne.

Next week, Damon starts production on the first new Bourne movie since 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum, reuniting with Paul Greengrass for a story that Damon describes as taking place in a world after NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.

“Without giving too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world,” he tells BuzzFeed. “It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy.”

Damon adds that the reason it took so long for him and Greengrass to return to the “Bourne” franchise is simple: They, like John Mayer, were waiting on the world to change.

“We always looked at those movies as really about the Bush presidency,” says Damon, “and so we kind of had to wait for the world to change.”

Now that the world has changed enough for Damon, Greengrass, and hopefully John Mayer, another “Bourne” is born, and apparently, it’s going to have an ending unlike anything we’ve seen in these movies so far.

“We’re starting in Greece, you know, the beginning of democracy,” he says. “And the movie ends in Las Vegas, the most grotesque incarnation of…”

He stops there, but I’m pretty sure the sentence continues as follows: “…three best friends that anyone could have.”
