Marvel Has Cast Their ‘Luke Cage’

Just in time for sweet Christmas, Marvel and Netflix have their “Daredevil” in Charlie Cox, their Jessica Jones (for “A.K.A. Jessica Jones”) in Krysten Ritter, and now a third piece of the puzzle has been added: Mike Colter is officially the man with the impervious skin, Luke Cage.

Cage is a classic comic book character who first came to fame as half of the duo “Heroes for Hire” along with the as-of-yet-uncast “Iron Fist.” But lately mostly due to the work of scribe Brian Michael Bendis, Luke Cage rocketed to A-list status, with a shaved head and a new-found sense of leadership as part of The Avengers.

All of that started with the character’s reinvention in Bendis’ gritty, true-crime (but set in the Marvel Universe) comic series “Alias,” from which “Jessica Jones” takes most of its plot. In it, Jones – a former Avenger turned private investigator – encounters Cage on the streets of New York, and strikes up a bit of a romantic relationship.

By which we mean they have graphic (for comic books, at least) anal sex.

No, we’re not joking. But (er, sorry) Cage and Jones continued to have a romantic relationship throughout the series and beyond, so with Colter joining first “Jessica Jones,” then anchoring his own Netflix series to follow — as confirmed by Marvel themselves — it looks like we’ll at least get touches of their storyline.

“Mike embodies the strength, edge and depth of Luke Cage,” executive producer/showrunner Melissa Rosenberg told Marvel.com. “We’re excited to have him bring this iconic Marvel character to life.”

So are we! “A.K.A. Jessica Jones” will premiere in 2015, while there’s no date for “Luke Cage” as of press time.
