Luke Cage Delivers Marvel’s Best Villain Yet In Action-Packed New Trailer

Marvel’s Luke Cage is indomitable. He’s powerful. He’s indestructible. He’s a “bulletproof black man” who hates guns. He’s undeniably cool—and he’s the superhero we need right now.

Netflix just debuted the latest action-packed trailer for its new Marvel series, Luke Cage, and not only does it highlight Luke’s (Mike Coulter) superhero sensibilities—like, say, his aversion to being one—it also demonstrates what makes Luke Cage the powerful black superhero drama fans have been waiting for. Throughout the trailer, men with guns try to take down the titular hero with bullets, and each time, they fail miserably. Whereas he takes down a hallway full of bad guys and leaves with nary a scratch.

The trailer also gives us an alluring first look at Mahershala Ali’s Cornell Stokes—one of the most compelling Marvel villains to grace our screens (trust me on this)—and badass NYPD detective Misty Knight (Simone Cook), who’s always down to challenge Luke on his own moral code. “There is nothing that can hurt you, so what the hell are you afraid of?” she asks in the promo below.

The hype for Luke Cage’s first solo onscreen adventure has been deafening since the beloved Marvel character made his debut in Season 1 of Netflix’s Jessica Jones. But fans of the comic book have been waiting more than 40 years to watch the unbreakable hero-for-hire come to life—and he couldn’t be making a more timely entrance.

“There aren’t a lot of African-American superheroes,” executive producer Cheo Hodari Coker said back in July. “I’ve been reading comics since I was 8 or 9 years old. Luke Cage stood out. When I think about what’s going on in the world right now, the world is ready for a bulletproof black man.”
