Joss Whedon Finally Weighs In On Marvel Vs DC

The brutal and legendary power struggle between DC and Marvel is almost epic enough to deserve a comic book of its own—and actually wouldn’t you read the heck out of that? The two distinct comic book worlds both have compelling characters, complex histories, and riveting storylines. And that’s what makes the obvious clash between the two movie-making empires so popcorn-worthy. After all, these kinds of real-life battles are truly polarizing (and the most fun). Surely countless friendships have been born and burned based on this debate alone.

The darling of the fandom world, Joss Whedon, has now weighed in—though admittedly he might be biased, having written and directed two Marvel movies of his own. But the man keeps it pretty diplomatic, calling DC’s choice to have their shows on TV with different actors at the same time as their movies “…a little interesting.” Classy!

“I did not see Suicide Squad. I saw Batman v Superman. Everybody’s got their own method. I think Marvel has been more successful systematically. DC has been more cinematic—their stuff looks amazing—but I feel like Kevin [Feige, President of Marvel Studios] is a really good storyteller. He really cares about coherence, and I feel like style never defeats substance at Marvel, but a little style creeps in.”

But it’s not as simple as all that. Having tried his hand at bringing Wonder Woman to the screen and graciously stepping down, Whedon clearly has a lot of love for the DC universe. He has high hopes for the new Wonder Woman movie.

“I want it to be good. The trailer was just wonderful. I’ll probably be disappointed, me more than anybody else, because I’ll be like, ‘Wow, my version…’ or whatever, but I can still get myself up for it. The trailer had her shield and her fire hammer and yep, I’m good, this will be fine, everything is good. Such an image.”
