Joss Whedon Is Done With ‘Avengers,’ But Would Want To ‘Play With Batman’

Joss Whedon has spent a significant portion of his life living in the Marvel Universe. Not only has he directed two “Avengers” films now, and not only has he participated in the creative process of numerous other Marvel movies, he also has written various Marvel comics, like “Astonishing X-Men” and “Runaways.”

But Whedon isn’t just a Marvel man; he has DC Comics geek cred, too, having famously taken a crack at “Wonder Woman” in a fabled script that never got far enough off the ground.

In other words, don’t pigeon hole Whedon into one side of the mainstream superhero aisle or the other. Whedon makes Marvel movies, but he enjoys DC Comics movies as much as anyone else — and he sees no reason why the two should be mutually exclusive.

“I get very confused when people say we’re in competition,” he told MTV’s Josh Horowitz while promoting “Age of Ultron,” his second “Avengers” film, and for now, his last.

“Competition for what? Their movies are so different. The way they approach them — the Marvel aesthetic and the DC aesthetic — couldn’t be more opposite. I love that. I love going to their movies. I want to see how they build their team. I want to see Affleck play Batman. Now I just get to sit back and be a fan of both.”

(And yes, if you were curious, of course Batman’s the DC Comics superhero Whedon would want to take a crack at. “Nobody doesn’t want Batman,” he said. “Everybody wants to play with Batman. Come on!”)

Avengers: Age of Ultron” hits theaters on May 1.
