Jenna Coleman Confirms She’s Leaving Doctor Who This Season

It sounds impossible, but it’s true: the Impossible Girl is definitely leaving.

After almost a full week of rumors and speculation, Jenna Coleman finally confirmed that she’d be leaving Doctor Who on the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show this morning, and then later to the world on her Twitter.

Coleman first joined the show in its seventh season as Clara Oswald, a mysterious girl who the Doctor invited to travel with him so he could figure out just what her deal was. While her character was initially divisive among fans who missed the Doctor’s previous companions (played by Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill), Coleman really shined during her last season alongside newcomer Peter Capaldi.

“It was emotional. It’s been in the works for a very long time,” she said of her final scenes, which have already been filmed. “Steven [Moffat] and I sat down a long time ago—a year, year and a half ago—and tried to work out the best place to do it and the best place in which to tell a really good story.”

Coleman’s future still looks bright—she’ll soon be starring as the young queen Victoria in an upcoming BBC series, which is basically the perfect role for her considering her plucky, confident sensibility and her ability to look fabulous in period costumes. (Not that she doesn’t look fabulous in everything, as clearly she’s the best dressed companion in NuWho history.)

But for now, she’s not out of time-traveler mode quite yet.

“I think I’m in denial,” Coleman said. “I see Peter all the time and I still see Matt [Smith] all the time, so I kind of believe I still have the keys to the TARDIS… which I might do because I kind of stole it.”

The ninth season of Doctor Who premieres this Saturday, September 19 on Space.
