J.J. Abrams Is Just As Mad About The Lack Of Rey Toys As You Are

Like any good multi-billion-dollar franchise, Star Wars: The Force Awakens opened with a treasure trove of toys accompanying it. But one character was suspiciously absent from the pile: namely, the film’s heroine Rey, played by Daisy Ridley.

While Rey figurines popped up here and there, she was noticeably less present in Star Wars merchandising than her male counterparts Finn, Poe, and Kylo Ren. She was even missing from Hasbro’s Force Awakens version of Monopoly. Fans protested the exclusion, which led Hasbro to update the game to add Rey. Now, Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams has spoken out about Rey’s absence in his film’s merchandising.

“It seems preposterous and wrong that the main character of the movie is not well represented in what is clearly a huge piece of the Star Wars world,” Abrams said Saturday during the Television Critics Association’s press tour, Entertainment Weekly reports. “I read that she wasn’t in the Monopoly game and was quickly making phone calls about this because if it were true—and it is true, and now Hasbro, of course, has said they’re going to put Rey in—it doesn’t quite make sense why she wouldn’t be there. She’s somewhat important in the story.”

Hopefully this means we’ll see a lot more of Rey on toy shelves going forward. Her droid companion BB-8 shouldn’t get to have all the fun.
