Is Natalie Portman the New Thor?

Marvel

A few months back, Marvel stated the mighty Thor comics would be going in a bold, estrogen-fuelled new direction. Cut to now, the new female Thor has been getting a lot of very positive feedback. But who is this XX chromosome Goddess of Thunder?

Just yesterday, in the eighth issue of the new Thor comic series, her identity was revealed to be…

Jane Foster!

Jane has been alive and kicking in comic book form since 1962, where she played nurse and love interest to Dr. Donald Blake, Thor’s Clark Kent-esque alter-ago. Since then, the character appeared off and on in the comics, but was more prominently featured in 2011’s Thor and 2013’s Thor: The Dark World, where she was played by Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman.

As for how the new Thor creators came up with this revelation, writer Jason Aaron recently told Vulture: “It was never just about the surprise or the mystery. Clearly I’ve had fun playing with that part of it over the course of these eight issues. But that’s really all just setup for the real story. And Jane was the one I had a story with, whose story I wanted to tell.” She’s grown and changed and evolved a lot over the years, become a doctor in her own right. So this to me is not just the next step for her character, but really the next evolution of the core promise that has always been at the heart of Thor’s mythology.”

The big question remains whether or not Portman will wield Thor’s mighty hammer in Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And more specifically, what will her involvement be in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok?

For now, here’s a look at the lovely cover art for the revelatory issue:
