George R.R. Martin Is Developing A New Sci-Fi Series For HBO

grr-martin

Good news, Game of Thrones fans: your favorite author and merciless character killer, George R.R. Martin, is taking his talents back to HBO to whip up what’s sure to be another hit show.

Martin is developing a new sci-fi series with HBO as part of the two-year development deal he signed with the channel in 2013. Per Entertainment Weekly, the official pitch for the show — titled “Captain Cosmos” — is as such: “At the dawn of the age of TV in 1949, a visionary young writer creates a science fiction series that tells stories no one else will dare to tell.”

Although he’s best known as an epic fantasy writer, Martin also has a ton of science fiction experience under his belt. He began his career writing episodes of the Twilight Zone revival on CBS, as well as writing and co-producing the CBS drama Beauty and the Beast in the ‘80s. He also continues to edit new installments of his sci-fi anthology series, Wild Cards.

While “Captain Cosmos” definitely sounds like an intriguing project, it may be a bit frustrating for fans who have been not-so-patiently waiting for Martin to finish “The Winds of Winter,” the sixth installment of his “Song of Ice and Fire” series. But The Hollywood Reporter claims that the new project won’t be a huge time commitment for Martin, which should allow him to continue hunkering down on his book. Besides, “Captain Cosmos” has already recruited Michael Cassutt — a writer on Syfy’s zombie drama Z Nation — to script the pilot episode.

Earlier this week, Martin blessed us with a Sansa-centric chapter from “The Winds of Winter,” and he recently revealed to EW that he’s determined to finish the book before Game of Thrones premieres its sixth season in 2016. ‘Atta boy, George. Write like the wind!
