Emilia Clarke Thinks Daenerys Is Finally Indestructible On Game Of Thrones

Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen, Mother of Dragons, the Unburnt, finally made her big move on Sunday night’s episode of Game of Thrones—and it was a fiery one, as the Breaker of Chains finally dismantled the patriarchy that’s been bringing her down since Season 1.

When Daenerys was brought before the Khals in the temple of the dosh khaleen in Vaes Dothrak, she did what any dragon would do: She set them all ablaze. It was a risky yet obvious plan for the Unburnt. As the khaleesi walked out of the burning temple, perfectly untouched by the flames, the Dothraki knelt before her. Having killed all of the Khals, she’s their Khaleesi now, and something tells us she’s headed west with her newfound army. (You know, after she murders everyone in Slaver’s Bay and GETS ON WITH HER LIFE.)

“She realizes that this is the missing piece,” actress Emilia Clarke told EW. “The Dothraki are the missing piece of her crew—she’s seemingly indestructible having Dothraki on her side.” (Yeah, “seemingly” is the key word here. Nothing is ever as it seems on Game of Thrones.)

Daenerys hasn’t demonstrated her incendiary party trick since Season 2 when her dragons saved her from the perilous House of the Undying by blowing fire through her to kill her captor. Though it’s long been assumed that Daenerys is fireproof through the magical Targaryen bond with her dragons, author George R.R. Martin has suggested that Dany’s superpower was a onetime thing. In fact, he has since claimed that it’s a “common misconception” that Targaryens are immune to fire.

However, show-runners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have played up Daenerys’s fire immunity in the HBO drama, proving that the Mother of Dragons seems to be the exception to the rule. After the death of her brother Viserys in Season 1, she declared, “He was no dragon; fire cannot kill a dragon.” Dragons were thought to be dead for thousands of years prior to the birth of Dany’s brood, so it’s possible her motherly bond makes her immune to fire. Though that wouldn’t explain why she was A-OK in that scalding hot water bath in Season 1.

Still, regardless of how she did it, Daenerys’s plan to take down the Khals was a huge step forward for the Targaryen queen. Dany’s story line has been stalled in Meereen for far too long, so to see the khaleesi return to her former glory as a badass, Unburnt bitch was thrilling to say the least. (Even if the scene directly mirrored Dany’s breakthrough moment in the first season.) Better yet: It was a plan she enacted by herself, without the help of Tweedledum and Tweedledee, Jorah and Daario. Boys, bye.

“It’s almost like the revelation she had when Jorah and Daario come to the rescue,” Weiss told EW. “She’s like, ‘Wait, I can do something none of these people can do and now that these two people can help me, I can use that to my advantage.’”

And use it she did. Dany’s big power move was a necessary reboot for her story line, which has been noticeably void of fire since she first stepped foot in Slaver’s Bay a few seasons ago. She’s been playing queen of a doomed city ever since — but with this new horde of warriors by her side, here’s hoping Mhysa stops wasting time in Meereen and burns it to the ground instead. OK, so maybe she won’t burn it. But the bros in Slaver’s Bay are going to have a hard time saying no to the new Dothraki queen.

Onward and westward, Khalessi. You’ve got a ship to catch.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, Clarke herself confirmed, “That ain’t no body double!”
