Fast & Furious Spin-Offs Could Be Happening And We Have Some Ideas

Are you ready for a Fast & Furious cinematic universe? Because it’s potentially in the works over at Universal and we are so here for it.

Vin Diesel and director F. Gary Gray may be in the middle of planning out the eighth instalment of the Fast & Furious franchise, but that hasn’t stopped Vin, and the folks at Universal, from looking at the big picture. With three more films currently in development, Diesel and Co. are in the preliminary stages of expanding the Fast world with prequels and spin-offs à la Marvel’s Avengers and Disney’s Star Wars standalone films.

“We’ve written out story lines for various characters,” Diesel told Variety. “We’ve been playing with it for a long time. It’s a very rich property and we’re committed to treating it with a lot of class.”

“We’re certainly in conversations about how we can expand the franchise now,” Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley confirmed. “It’s an ensemble cast and there’s room to bring characters in and out.”

Of course, the studio’s main focus at this time is Fast & Furious 8 and the subsequent final two films. But that hasn’t stopped us from brainstorming all of the prequels, spin-offs and standalone films we want to see in the franchise. With a property like The Fast and the Furious, and a cast that includes Diesel, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, and Ludacris, the possibilities are endless.

The Fast and the Furious: 1327

Every superhero needs an origin story, and Dom Teretto is no exception. The prequel would chronicle Dom and Mia’s upbringing in Los Angeles and—gasp—the first time he ever took his beloved Charger for a spin. Plus, don’t you want to see how Letty got that scar on her hip play out on the big screen? A prequel wouldn’t be a bad way for the franchise to reconnect with its humble, street-racing roots. Coronas for everyone!

Fast & Furious: Agent Hobbs

Please, please, pah-leeeeze give Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson his own Fast & Furious movie. If there’s one thing Furious 7 taught us, it’s that Agent Hobbs has an emotional backstory. First introduced in Fast Five, DSS Agent Hobbs provided little more than comic relief and huge action-packed moments, but when Furious 7 introduced his daughter Samantha, we saw an entirely new side to Hobbs, one we wouldn’t mind exploring further. It’s time for Daddy to go to work.

The Fast & The Furious: London Calling

Don’t you want to see more of Shaw brothers, Owen and Deckard? Of course you do! When Owen Shaw revealed that he had kidnapped Letty during the events of Fast & Furious—AKA the fourth installment of the franchise—we were instantly curious. What had Letty been up to in London with her new crew? Honestly, we just want to see Michelle Rodriguez in a solo action flick, kicking ass and taking names. Why not pen Letty’s walk on the wild side with the Shaw brothers—and maybe Mama Shaw?!—in a standalone film?

Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift 2

If you’re one of those so-called fans who doesn’t appreciate the pure magic that is Tokyo Drift, then you can GTFO. Not only did Tokyo Drift feature some of the best street-racing sequences, it also introduced a slew of new characters. So what if The Fast and the Furious returned to Tokyo and followed the city’s new Drift King… or Drift Queen. We really want to see a movie in which Drift Queen Neela and her badass, all-female squad of drifters, including Suki and her iconic pink car from 2 Fast 2 Furious, take on the patriarchy.

The Fast and the Furious: Los Bandoleros

A short written, directed and starring Diesel, Los Bandoleros provided the backstory leading up to the oil truck heist at the start of the “Fast & Furious.” Light on action, heavy on romance, a feature length version of Los Bandoleros would be 90 per cent Dom and Letty driving to the beach and being super adorable, and you know what? We’re totally OK with that.
