Here’s Why Fantastic Four Was A Fantastic Failure

After getting all kinds of negative attention for co-writing and producing summer mega-disappointment Fantastic Four, Simon Kinberg can now breathe a huge sigh of relief. While memories of that recent dud are still fresh in everyone’s memory, Kinberg is currently basking in the blockbuster success of The Martian (which he produced, but didn’t write). Understandably, he’s out there doing everything he can to resurrect his rep, reminding the industry that he’s still capable of guiding a sci-fi property to success. Of course, no journalist can profile Kinberg without acknowledging the elephant in the room.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kinberg was asked if there’s any truth to the rumours that his crowded production slate—which includes Deadpool, Logan’s Run, X-Men: Apocalypse, and a Star Wars anthology movie—caused him to take his eye off the ball while making Fantastic Four. According to Kinberg, it’s quite the opposite. “I was there every day on set of Fan Four, as I am on anything that I’m the writer and the producer of,” he said. “Some movies work out and some don’t. In my experience, there’s not a direct correlation between the process and the product.”

What about reports that director Josh Trank behaved unprofessionally on set? Kinberg doesn’t go into specifics, but he admits that the director’s public criticism of the movie was “disappointing.” Still, he claims he’d be willing to work with Trank again. This is probably damage control, but his favourable impressions of the cast seem relatively heartfelt. “I do think that there is a great Fantastic Four movie with that cast. But there’s so many different elements that need to come together perfectly. It’s like a collaboration between all these strangers. And if there’s a few things that don’t go right, it’s hard to recover.”
