Doctor Who Will Air For At Least 5 More Years

Doctor Who

BBC

Good news, Whovians: executive producer Steven Moffat says Doctor Who will be playing on a TV screen near you until at least 2020. The year 2020 sounds awfully distant, but it’s actually less than five years away (where’s my jetpack!?).

Having just celebrated the 10th anniversary of the show’s re-launch last month, Moffat had this to say to Doctor Who Magazine: “I thought it would last 10 years… It’s going to do a minimum of 15.” The very pleased producer continued to gush by saying “10 years on, our ratings are pretty much the same. Actually, internationally, bigger. No show does that! You’re meant to go down! Doctor Who just stays. It’s extraordinary!”

Not to top last month’s 10th anniversary festivities, but the series as a whole has endured for over 50 years since its initial broadcast all the way back in 1963. On that impressive note, the BBC’s outgoing head of drama commissioning, Ben Stephenson, made an even bolder statement: “As long as the people looking after it are passionate about it… there’s absolutely no reason why it can’t do another 50 years.” Kinda makes Moffat’s words seem a tad modest by comparison, but we’ll take it!

While an official release date has yet to be announced, word has it Doctor Who is slated to return for its ninth season sometime in the fall. Fear not, you’ll be the first to know when we have more to say about that.
