Doctor Who Cast Its First Trans Actress—And That’s Not The Biggest News

The modern Doctor Who has a lot of amazing guests coming up in its 9th season, like Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams and returning favorite Michelle Gomez. But none of them are making history in the same way that Bethany Black will!

Black is a transgender comedian who recently made her acting debut in former Who show runner Russell T. Davie’s latest series, Banana. She will appear in a guest role on the hit science fiction show—and though she’s the show’s first-ever openly trans actor, the bigger news is that the character she’ll be playing, according to The Independent, is not transgender. That’s pretty amazing, given that most trans actors are generally pigeonholed into playing trans characters.

“It is genuinely the greatest job I could ever have imagined getting. Everything about it is magical,” Black said on her Facebook page, noting that she’d been a fan of the original series as a child. “I’m enjoying every day of filming and cherishing it, because you never know if you’ll ever get to do anything like this again. I only hope that I do the role and the show justice, and that you all enjoy it. For me it’s the gig of a lifetime.”

“Now to sit back and wait until The [Daily] Mail realises the BBC have cast an openly trans lesbian in a family show…” she also teased earlier this week.
