This Featurette Explains Why Doctor Strange Is ‘Entirely New’

With the release of Doctor Strange less than a month away, Marvel isn’t holding anything back. In the last few weeks, they’ve treated fans to an impressive motion poster, the promise of visuals that “we’ve never seen before,” and 15 minutes of IMAX footage that suggested they weren’t exaggerating. The studio has now released Universes Within, a featurette that offers further examples of the aforementioned imagery, along with commentary by producer Kevin Feige, director Scott Derrickson, and star Benedict Cumberbatch.

Citing the “very, very out there” comics, Cumberbatch promises that they’ve pushed hard to create uniquely exciting imagery. According to Derrickson, it doesn’t hurt that IMAX got involved. “For movies like this, IMAX is more immersive,” he explains. “Every set piece is an attempt to give audiences visuals and sequences in ways that we haven’t seen them done before.”

As for Feige, he’s happy to report that this is far more than just another superhero movie. “Doctor Strange represents an entirely new aspect to the Cinematic Universe,” he says. “Steve Ditko is one of the greatest Marvel artists in history and that we’re now able to take what he put in the mid-’60s—these trippy comic panels and comic covers—and we now have the technology to put that in big three dimensional space on a movie screen is amazing… and we’re not pulling back.”

Doctor Strange opens on November 8 in 3D, RealD 3D and IMAX 3D. To get yourself through the home stretch, revisit the trailer below.
