Chewbacca Actor Pays Tribute To Kenny Baker
On Saturday, Star Wars fans were dealt a crushing below when news broke that Kenny Baker died at the age of 81. While the actor’s tenure as R2-D2 came to an end after 2005’s Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Baker will always be the face most associated with that character. Over the years, Baker developed a close tie with another important Star Wars actor whose face you might not recognize: Peter Mayhew. Better known as the guy in the Chewbacca suit, Mayhew tweeted a heartfelt tribute to Baker yesterday.
“I know I’m a bit late with this, but my sadness is profound and no words seemed adequate to convey what we collectively and I personally have lost with the passing of my dear friend Kenny Baker,” Mayhew wrote. “Kenny and I became fast friends the first time we met and formed a lifelong bond after realizing that we had so much in common. Although people liked to contrast the difference in our heights, we found we shared many of the same struggles, from finding clothes, driving cars and fitting in airplane seats to health issues and the ever constant stares of strangers.”
Elaborating on Baker’s life, Mayhew revealed that he saw the actor as a kind of creative soul mate. “We understood each other on a level that few others can,” he explained, before highlighting the unique connection Baker—a regular at conventions—forged with the Star Wars community. “Ever the showman, Kenny was always eager to meet his fans. In the decades we knew each other, I never met anyone who enjoyed the public more.”
